In what ways does our media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

When we were creating our music video we had to find out what the general conventions of music videos are all very similar they usually involve fast cuts, which will never last more than 5-10 seconds per shot. The videos either try to follow the songs imagery or the story portrayed by the lyrics, this depends on type of my music video being shot whether it's a concept video, narrative or performance. The style of music video we were going for was a narrative style so we had many close ups of our character which fits into the generic conventions of this style of video. We broke the conventions of this style as we have our main actor singing which isn’t normal as there is usually a separate person singing the lyrics if they are being sung at all. We chose to do this for many reasons the first of these being we felt that it fitted in the style of the video and we wanted to show the progression of what our main protagonist was going through falling in love with this girl.

Digipak conventions similarly to music video conventions generally tend to differ depending on what the genre of the song is. With this said though every digipak has a few universal things for example all digipaks have between 4-6 panels of information/pictures on them, they will all feature the name of the band and have a song list, they will also feature there record producers logo and have information in small print to do with copy right. Most digipaks generally use very bright vivid colours to make the item stand out on the shelf with the colour scheme linking into the meaning of the lyrics with reds tending to either link to anger or love and black to symbolize death and depression. With our digipak we didn’t0 follow the majority of the general stylistic conventions to appeal to our target audience as we used dark colours even though the main song on the album is about the singer loving this girl. This is really the only conventions we didn’t follow and we followed everything else, we even featured all of the copyright laws on the back of the last panel.

When designing the Advert we looked into the conventions and these are near enough the same as the digipaks with the edition of a few things, these being that they usually feature the artists website, a quote from a website or a review from a magazine in our case we chose Q Magazine, and places where the album would be sold (we chose Amazon and HMV). We included these to make the advert look more realistic which we think has worked.

Our media products conventions which we have followed I don’t think will attract people our products it will more likely be the conventions that we didn’t follow for example the colours. The only conventions we have followed that will enhance our product will be how powerful some of the shots are and what the picture on the front cover symbolizes a lonely man which will offer escapism.
